HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the production dates of the movement combined with the styling we can date this watch to being made circa 1975.
CONDITION
Tiffany & Co. of New York are one of the World’s best known high end jewellers. Established in 1837 they grew quickly and now employ over 14,000 staff! And of course they co starred with Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s in 1961. Their annual Blue Book introduced America to high end jewellery. But they have also been making and selling watches for a long time – in 1866 they introduced America’s first stopwatch.
Universal Geneve had their peak in the 1960’s and 70’s, with watches like the Polerouter, Tri Compax and ‘Nina Rindt’ variations selling for thousands now. Like a lot of watch companies the 1980’s were not kind – cheap quartz movements and gold being worth 4.5x what it was a decade previously all but shut them down. But there is no doubt that they made nice watches, so when Tiffany & Co. commissioned them to make this watch it would have come as no surprise to anyone. Many watches Tiffany sold were co branded, so you might have Rolex and Tiffany on the same dial, but that didn’t happen here (possibly due to the smaller ladies watch dimensions?). The oval case would have been inspired by Patek Philippe’s Ellipse model, as many were, and this is stamped 18K on the case back. The movement is Universal Geneve’s 1-42, a seventeen jewel manual wind movement that is working nicely. The dial is slightly faded, but evenly. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
