Vacheron Constantin are one of the ‘holy trinity’ of watchmakers, and this was billed as the thinnest watch in the World. Model reference 7590.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Vacheron&Constantin became Vacheron Constantin in 1970. This watch has a Vacheron Constantin dial but Vacheron et Constantin on the inside of the case and on the movement, so it must be a transition piece. In addition, In 1972 Vacheron Constantin launched a very distinctive rhombus style watch, very similar but with the unusual case, and this design did not appear in this video of old catalogue cards, whereas our watch did.
CONDITION
The reason this watch can be so thin is the calibre 1003/1 movement, first launched in 1955. Also used by Audemars Piguet, this movement is incredible – 117 parts, all assembled and running and about the thickness of a penny at 1.64mm. They are all highly finished too, as you would expect from Vacheron Constantin, and the movement was adjusted to five positions and temperatures. Incredibly you can still buy a new Vacheron Constantin watch fitted with this historic movement, but it is £26,700. This case is all 18k gold, as is the original buckle, and the strap is a good quality new Lizard one. The case has very slightly bent lugs, which would straighten out no problem (we currently have no access to a goldsmith). The glass and hands are excellent, and the dial good – the dial is a so called Sigma dial, to show the quality of the case is matched with the materials used throughout the watch, such as hands and hour markers.
