This Roamer Stingray S was a 200M divers watch with internal dive bezel – even if this one doesn’t appear to have got wet! Model reference 471.9120.602.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
We have found two adverts for the Stingray S models, but only the 1970 advert had the red internal bezel the same as this watch has.
CONDITION
Dive watches with internal bezels are commonly referred to as super compressors, but that term is only accurate for those designed and made by ESPA – normally with cross hatched crowns. The design Roamer use is unique to them, where the whole centre of the watch comes out as one piece. Due to the dual crowns, we don’t have the correct tool to open this watch up, but it will be the MST 471 in house automatic movement inside, with either 28 or 17 jewels. It is running at about 45 seconds slow, which normally we would adjust, but the trace on the timegrapher is clean. The case has some marks, quite a few on the back where somebody previously has tried to open the case with a conventional tool. The bottom crown is signed, and this controls winding the watch and setting the time. The crown at three turns the internal bezel, but only when pulled out to position one – a clever design to stop the bezel being accidentally moved. The lume in the hands is dirty, especially in the minute hand, but the lume in both the hands and on the dial is all original. There is a fine thread or hair underneath the signed original crystal that we can’t remove, due to access issues, but it is not a mark on the dial. The rubber strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
