A large Girard-Perregaux chronograph that has the fantastic Valjoux 23 movement inside.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
This style of Girard-Perregaux logo was first used about 1967, and the production of this movement lasted from 1916 to 1974. The date of circa 1970 for production seems logical.
CONDITION
The length of time that this family of chronograph movements ran for is incredible – 58 years. There were many variations, including the Calibres 72 and 72C used in the Rolex Daytona and ‘Jean-Claude Killy’ triple calendars respectfully. This watch has the Calibre 23, which is the last Valjoux chronograph to feature a column wheel as they switched to cheaper, cam and pusher systems. This is all working as it should. The case needs to be large to house the 13 Ligne movement, and that suits modern tastes. Fully stainless steel as you would expect from a premium brand like Girard-Perregaux, this example still has the signed crown and clasp. The bracelet itself is not signed, but is high quality, solid links and could well be original. The black dial is very good, with the sunken subdials for seconds and chronograph 45 minute counter very clean. The glass has a few small scratches, but nothing too bad, and the case has not been polished but remains very good.
Very few of these were made and this is a chance to get hold of a really good one.
