The later, compressor cased Heuer Autavia chronograph with reverse panda dial. Very collectible! Model reference 7763C MH.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
There were over 80 different versions of the Autavia in the 60’s and 70’s. But the Compressor case was launched in 1969, which is slightly larger than the earlier screw down case backs, so this watch can not be older than 1969. The movement was phased out in 1973, so it is quite a tight window.
CONDITION
This is a very cool watch. You can imagine this on the wrist of a racing driver in the late 60’s – Jack Heuer used to make sure racing drivers wore his watches, and the word Autavia is actually a portmanteau of Automobile and Aviation – this was the target audience. The Valjoux 7733 movement is all working well, being manually wound via the signed Heuer crown. The only thing that isn’t working is the bezel, which should turn. It is though aligned correctly, and better tight than loose. The case has signs of being used, but doesn’t look polished. The dial and hands are all good, with the original tritium just showing some aging. The petrol blue Geckota leather strap is good quality and new, but could be swapped for a different colour or style if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.
