HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
It isn’t possible to accurately date Avia watches. However we have found an advert for an Avia Marino from 1969, and the turtle style case was first introduced by Seiko in 1968, so this may have took design clues from the Seiko 6105 (or maybe it was Seiko copying Avia?)
CONDITION
Avia is a name that used to make good watches, but in the eighties and beyond went for a cheap and cheerful approach. This Marino dive watch was made before they changed tack (it wasn’t a bad business move – in the 1970’s gold quadrupled in price, so no one was making or buying mid range gold watches, and quartz movements were cheaper and more accurate. The Avia brand is now owned by Fossil Group.) The case is all stainless steel, and houses an ETA calibre 2472 movement. That has 25 jewels and semi quickset date, which is operated by turning the hands from midnight to 20:30 and back past midnight. It is all working well. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath, and is signed Excaliber International. This watch would also look good on a rubber strap. The bezel is very stiff, and like the crown the plating has worn through to reveal the brass underneath on the leading edges. The dial is very good, and all the tritium lume on the hour plots and the hands is original and in place.
