This blue dialed Mondia Orbitron is a watch you won’t have seen many – or any- of before. Model reference 97-775-60.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
While there is no database that we know of for Mondia watches, we do have several clues. First the movement is recorded as being made circa 1970. But in 1969 Mondia joined Zenith and Movada and the group shared many parts to save money – which there is zero evidence of here. The other clue is the space inspired name Orbitron, and the late sixties were full of similar names as Space exploration was very en vogue. From all this we estimate this was made circa 1968.
CONDITION
The basic parts of this watch are all good. You have a stainless steel case in a typical for the time ‘c’ case. That has a screw down case back and signed crown. The movement is an Mondia signed AS1913 automatic, with a quick set date you operate by pushing the crown in towards the case. This is working well, but never operate the quick set while the date is changing normally (any time between 2am and 10pm is fine, or move the hands to that time if needed). The date window is blue to match the dial – to often these are kept white to save a few pence. There are some marks on the crown side of the case, and minor marks elsewhere, but it is good for the age this is from. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
