This Baume & Mercier dress watch has all the right characteristics for a dress watch – high quality, two hands, no complications. Model reference 35130.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The information available on Baume & Mercier is very limited. We know they temporarily stopped making mechanical movements in 1983, so this pre dates that. The Swiss hallmarks do not carry a date code like British hallmarks, so they don’t help. The logo is later than the 1940’s, as they started using the Phi symbol in the early fifties. There is no reference to Piaget anywhere, who bought Baume & Mercier in 1965, although the case maker is marked as PG (Piaget Group?). This is a very loose estimate, but the watch could have been made circa 1966.
CONDITION
While this is difficult to date, it is certainly in nice condition. The textured finish to the bezel and dial allow the light to reflect in interesting ways. The case has not been polished, so will show some light marks, but these should be expected on a vintage watch and certainly are not bad. The case shuts crisply and the inside of the case has lots of service marks engraved into it. The seventeen jewel movement, calibre 1050, is running well and despite being hidden by the solid gold case back is beautifully finished with Côtes de Genève stripes. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
