When Accurist wanted to make a new divers watch range, they turn to their back catalogue and found this Marinograf model.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The movement used in this watch, with an updated date mechanism, was first available in 1965 so this watch can not be older than that. That also fits the styling and logo design. But the biggest clue is Accurist themselves have made a homage to their original, and quote it comes from 1966 catalogue.
CONDITION
Founded in 1946, Accurist have two phases. Before 1970, they built solid, mid range quality watches with mainly 21 jewel movements. But in the 1960’s the brand also launched Old England watches, a cheap fashion watch which was hugely successful. As the quartz crisis shook the industry, Accurist went for cheaper watches for the mass market – to great effect by the way. While many companies went bust, they survived and thrived. But post 1970 the watches generally are a much lower level of finish and quality.
The new 1966 Divers range demonstrate this. Powered by Japanese quartz movements, and available for a very reasonable £109, we are not knocking them. But the watch we have here, genesis, has a 21 jewel Swiss ETA automatic movement that has been copper plated, much as Omega watch movements used to be. The thick black paint on the dial has some patina, but that and the faded lume plots are what vintage watch collectors want. The lollipop hand and the 600ft ‘superwaterproof’ claim, as well as the oversized crown, show the Marinograf was built for diving as a proper tool watch (rather than cheaper desk divers). The rubber strap is new, and could be swapped for a different material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case and movement.

By buying anything pre owned you are effectively reusing what already exists, but this takes it further and makes us feel good.
