This Vulcain men’s dress watch has a 14k yellow gold case, so was likely destined for a customer in America back in the 1960’s when it was new.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
This watch doesn’t carry UK hallmarks that would allow us to discover the assay date easily, nor has the case been engraved with any presentation to help us either. But we do know the movement was introduced in 1965, so the watch can not be older than this year but may be newer.
CONDITION
Vulcain are better known for their Cricket alarm watches, but here we have a classic gold dress watch with just three hands. The crown is signed with a V, and that powers the Peseux 330 movement that is signed for Vulcain. America had a higher standard for gold that the UK – 14k versus 9k in the UK – so the chances are this watch was heading to the US when new. The inside of the case is stamped Brevet 305775 – this is a registered invention but we haven’t been able to find out what it relates to (but it does appear in different brand watches, such as Jaeger-LeCoultre, so it may relate to a case design feature rather than a movement). The dial is mainly clean, but does have some marks especially near 4 and 8. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.
