With an Excelsior Park movement, retailed by Camerer Cuss and Rolls Royce on the dial and engraving this is an interesting stopwatch.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
This is hard to date, but there is a stamp on the movement saying 1-66 which could be 1966 (the movement is an Excelsior Park number 1, or the 1 could be for January or 1st quarter – these are theories not facts). But the British Museum have a watch with the same movement, and same 1-66 stamp, which they have put at circa 1965. Who are we to question them?
CONDITION
In the mid sixties Rolls Royce were one business, before the aero engine business was spun off from the car company. This stopwatch could have been used to time experiments, car 0-60 acceleration, or productivity but whatever it was intended for it didn’t do a lot of work – the condition of the case is near perfect. The only damage is a small scratch on the plexiglass near thirty. The retailer, Camer Cuss of Oxford Street, London, where a long established high end retailer who probably had a job lot of these stopwatches made for Rolls Royce on a contract. They employed Excelsior Park, a quality movement maker specialising in stopwatches and chronographs movements to Zenith, Girard-Perregaux and Gallet among others. This movement has an interesting twist too – it has a spare parts compartment built into the design. We have taken it off and the compartment contains a spring, screw and even a balance staff (that would have been more relevant for earlier versions without balance shock protection – Incabloc in this case). Everything is working perfectly, and this could appeal to many different collectors.
