HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Girard-Perregaux make some very nice watches, but they are difficult to date accurately. However the movement they used in this watch was co developed with Doxa, Eberhard & Co., Favre-Leuba and Zodiac and this dates to circa 1960.
CONDITION
The 31 series movement that is used in this watch has semi quick set date and runs at 21,600bph. It also has 25 jewels and an interesting regulating gear for precise time keeping, and it is all working well. Some models of the Gyromatic had 14 extra synthetic rubies in the roller wheels, but this is the simpler design and the 39 jewel Gyromatic can be a little fiddily to maintain unless you are familiar with them. We are very careful when buying black dials from this period – not only were they not offered as much as they are today, but black is also the favourite colour of the dial restorer. But we have examined this under the microscope and are happy it is original. As is the crown, with the GP logo stamped on it. The acrylic crystal has a date magnifier under the crystal (so not like a Rolex Cyclops). The case has some corrosion on the outside of the seal, on the threads of the screw down case back. But is is still screwing down cleanly and the seal did its job and the water didn’t get to the movement. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
