This Buren Grand Prix ladies cocktail watch has a marcasite case and an in house movement.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

We do not know of a way to definitively date Buren watches, but we have adverts from 1948 for their Grand Prix watches and the movement is dated to circa 1960.  We have picked a year near to that date because the serial number on the case back starts 57, and some companies did use that system.  1957 also fits the design of the watch.

CONDITION

The fashion for marcasite watches was quite popular, adding a bit of 1950’s sparkle without the cost of diamonds.  The marcasite stones are actually iron sulphide, technically a Pyrite rather than marcasite which makes it more stable.  All the stones in the bezel are in place, but the bottom right and top left lugs are missing the smallest stone at the very tip.  Given the small size of the case if this is noticed without an eyeglass then the person seeing it should be applauded for excellent eyesight!   One of the photos we have taken of this watch shows the marcasite cut at 43x life size, so you can see why the light bounces off as it does.  The manual wind movement is Buren’s own calibre 360.  It has 17 jewels and is working well.  The Tissot branded suede strap is lightly used but fits the style of this watch better than any new strap we have in stock.

This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
