With a similar design to the Ernest Borel Cocktail kaleidoscope watches, did Technos have these made by Ernest Borel – or just copy them?
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
There is very little information on this model anywhere, but the movement used in the watch was first introduced in 1955 so this watch can not be older than 1955 but may be newer. The first Ernest Borel Cocktail watches were introduced in 1953.
CONDITION
What at first looks like a complex mechanism is actually quite simple. Instead of a seconds hand a clear disc with a pattern is fitted. When this turns and passes under a fixed alternating pattern, you get an moving pattern on the dial. There is nothing special about the movement – a good ETA 2390 seventeen jewel hand winder – to make this work. when looking via magnification you can see a slight crack tot he rotating ‘seconds’ disc, but it is not affecting performance. The case is 20 micron gold plated, and has stood up well to the years of wear. The dial is original and the writing for Technos and Rainbow are both faded but legible. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and crown.
