An inexpensive Swiss vintage watch, with an interesting dial, this Bernex is a lot of smiles per pound.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Bernex were formed in 1858, but this is clearly far later than that. By the styling, size and the movement production dates we estimate this was made circa 1955.
CONDITION
We bought this because of the dial and sometimes this is enough. But digging deeper and you notice it has a screw on case back rather than the standard clip on, 20 micron gold plating instead of 10, and incabloc shock protection on the balance which wasn’t standard fitment in the fifties either. The Swiss lever movement is an FHF 28, with 17 jewels. This has been checked and is running well, helped by a new crown, stem and setting lever. There is some staining to the dial, but is is not too bad, and the same applies to the plating wear on the lugs. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
