This Roamer has a Bagobloc (sealed by a ring) case, marked as water proof and shock resistant.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Roamer were famous for their waterproof cases, but many of their patents were registered in 1955 and this watch doesn’t use them, so we are presuming this is earlier than 1955. That fits the styling and movement date too. 1953 was a very popular year for water proof watches, being the launch year for the Rolex Submariner, Zodiac SeaWolf and Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, as well as the Smiths ‘Everest’ worn to the summit of Mount Everest.
CONDITION
The Bagobloc Tropical case has the main part in chrome, then the case back is stainless steel as is the sealing ring used to make this watch waterproof to the standards of the day (no vintage watch should be any where near water today of course!). The main case part does show some wear, but overall it is pretty good. There is a stamp on the top left lug which looks like a makers mark, but we have been unable to identify the maker – the name bagobloc doesn’t appear to be trademarked either. The case is unusually large for the time at 36mm. The manual wind movement is not signed by any maker on the back, but it is running well. The dial is quite clean, but the Roamer lettering is smudged slightly. All the lume plots are still present and the applied hours have a copper or rose gold finish which is quite attractive. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
