This ladies Eterna-Matic features the world’s first automatic movement with ball bearings on rotor for extra efficiency – so good that Eterna redesigned their logo to feature the five ball bearings.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

From the serial number on the case back we can date this watch to being made in 1951.  There is a slight variance in the Eterna numbers, so we have said this is made circa 1951.

CONDITION

The watch is a high end timepiece, and unusually for the time is cased in stainless steel.  This not only means it has survived better than chromed or gold plated cases, but is also an indicator of quality.  Almost all ladies watches of this period would not have seconds hands either, and automatic movement were normally not made this small.  So when it was made it would not have been cheap.

The case has a few tool marks from being opened over the last 65 years, but no real damage other than that.  The dial has a few age spots but nothing significant.  The nipple crown looks to be original, and the groundbreaking Eterna 1165R movement will be cleaned and oiled before being sent out.  The leather cord type strap is used, but with lots of life left in it.  The watch will be supplied in a modern presentation case.
