Benrus was founded in 1921, and quickly challenged the other major American watchmakers of Bulova, Elgin and Hamilton.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the production date of the movement, combined with the styling, we think this was was made circa 1950. The decade after WW2 lead to a revival of the streamlined, art deco styling of the 1930’s, but this has a more advanced movement.
CONDITION
Like Bulova, Benrus imported Swiss movements and cased them in America. This is a classic model of the time, with hooded lugs with pyramid patterns stamped into the edges of the case. The tonneau shaped case is gold plated and this had stood up well, but there is some wear on the crown side from repeated winding. The dial is original and good, with just a few small marks, and the hour hand with the large circle is a nice design touch. The AS1456 17 jewel manual wind movement is running fine. The expanding bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. It is made by Excaliber and has a 1/10th gold cap, but can be swapped for a new leather strap if preferred.
This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
