An early Monopusher chronograph from a company that specialised in making them.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
Eberhard launched their first chronograph for the wrist in 1919, and you can see that in their online museum. This continued to be their flagship model throughout the 1920’s, and in 1935 they launched a two button chronograph to replace the Monopusher. By 1939 their logo had also changed slightly, so even if the monopusher was still in production after 1935 it can not be later than 1939. Given that this watch has standard fixed lugs rather than the earliest hinged lugs we think it is from circa 1930.
CONDITION
We have to remember than this watch is approaching 100 years old when assessing condition, so some allowances have to be made. The enamel dial is clean, with ‘snail’ central graduations, and the print in both colours very good, but there are also cracks in the enamel. The blued hands are straight, but the hour hand doesn’t match the minute hand in style – both these styles were used by Eberhard&Co, so this may be a factory option or a mix up at some point. The movement is working well, including the chronograph as demonstrated in the video. The movement is a column wheel chronograph, calibre 16000, as the cheaper cam operated chronos hadn’t been invented by this stage. The large case is chromed and shows significant wear on the rear, possibly from a nato style strap or maybe someone tried to polish the case badly. The case is signed on the inside of the rear hinged caseback, and the front bezel is also hinged. The bund leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different style if preferred, but the bund covers the case back wear nicely.
