CONDITION

The Holy Trinity of watchmakers, or top tier, are widely acknowledged at Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe, and knocking at the door is A. Lange and Sohne.  These companies make some of the most widely sought after watches in the world, and their commitment to complete quality is respected.  This doesn’t come cheap – of the 100 most expensive watches sold at auction, 72 were made by Patek Philippe.  The top two were both grand complication watches, and for those of us that don’t have $31,000,000 then this watch is known as the small complications.

A complication is anything other than hands to tell the hour and minute.  This watch adds the most useful extra complications – a sub second dial at 4, a date pointer and a power reserve.  There is also a moon phase complication, but how useful that is to most people is debatable – it is however nice to add the colour to the dial.  These are all placed on the porcelain white dial and are easily legible.  The case is known as an officer style case, and has a hinged rear case cover to look at the movement (which is protected behind a second sapphire crystal.  In some ways this is nicer than just a standard exhibition case back, as you have the power to decide when to catch a glimpse at the extremely well finished movement.  That movement is a calibre 240, which the base model has powered Patek’s since it was launched in 1977.  Indeed you could order a new Nautilus 5712/1A-001 that would have the same movement, but the steel cased version has a long waiting list and would cost £50,000+.  The microrotor is made for 22k gold, chosen to be more dense a metal and prove more power while using less space.  The watch has pushers on the side of the case for rapid setting of the date and moonphase, and these also have a safety feature built in to prevent damage to the movement is used while the calendar was automatically changing.  Our watch is cased in 18k yellow gold, with screw pin lugs and a turban style crown, and at 36mm it is an excellent size to wear.

This watch will be supplied with an original Patek Philippe travel case, the Extract from the Archives and our Certificate of Authenticity.
