HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
The helpful people at Longines, having seen detailed photos of this watch, have confirmed this was sold to their UK distributor, Baume, on 26th April 1996.
CONDITION
Longines recently relaunched the VHP branding, but this style originally came out in 1984. The idea was to make your watches better than a standard quartz, but with standard quartz already pretty accurate it took some serious upgrading. This included thermocompensating the crystal, to allow the best performance year round. So the movement can be good for +/- 10 seconds a year. For comparison a COSC mechanical chronometer is roughly +/- 7 seconds a day. All is working well with the calibre L237.2 fitted to this watch (based on an ETA 255.563), and we will fit a new battery before sending this watch out.
The bracelet is long, but being bi metal there is some wear to the plating on the high point of the central links. It is not always visible, but it is there. The movement has a nice trick where you can advance the hour hand by an hour jump. This is ideal for those who travel frequently, and with a watch so precise the fact that you don’t stop the watch running to adjust the hour is only an advantage. The sapphire crystal is perfect, and the dial is also exceptionally clean.
