Automatic watches from 1985 are always tricky to find, and this Seiko 5 hits the mark. Model reference 6309-8970.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in July 1985. The 6309 movement ran from 1976 to 1988.
CONDITION
In 1985 the most fashionable watches were small, thin, often squared cased and commonly featured at least some gold plating – everything this Seiko 5 is not. However now people want bigger, mechanical watches without gold plating – everything this Seiko 5 is! This particular model has the 24 hour markers printed on the dial, day and date calendar that can be quickset, and the day wheel can be set to English or Spanish. The movement is Seiko’s 6309A, a 17 jewel automatic only movement so it does suit people that are more active, as it cannot be manually wound. The acrylic crystal has a few marks. The all stainless steel case is unpolished and would have come on a bracelet originally, which has since been lost. The quality fabric Archer strap is nearly new, and could be swapped for a different colour leather strap if preferred – pretty much any colour strap would go with this watch.
