This 1985 Rolex Datejust has the harder to find matte grey dial, which looks stunning. Model reference 16030
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number between the lugs, which starts with the lucky 888, we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1985. The bracelet was made in January 1985 if you want to get even closer, but it may not have been fitted to the case for a month or two.
CONDITION
The 16030 is a great reference for a Datejust. The earlier watches did not have quick set date, but had the stepped dial. The later watches had sapphire crystal, but lost the open 6 and 9 so associated with Rolex watches that some less informed people presume the closed 6 and 9 watches are not correct. But two things set this Datejust 16030 apart, and they are condition and dial colour.
It is unusual to find a grey dial on a Datejust, but not impossible. It was just that black, silver and gold were more popular and therefore easier to find now. However the condition of this watch stands it apart from the rest. The steel bezel is close to perfect, with just one small ding near 8. The pale grey dial looks different shades in different lights, and is captivating for those of use that can happily stare a a watch and not notice the time! The acrylic crystal has no scratches. The quick set date works as designed, and the signed twinlock crown screws down easily and correctly. The Jubilee bracelet is long, and while these always have some flex that does actually make them more comfortable to live with. The clasp is correctly signed 62510H to indicate it is the solid linked jubilee, and the endlinks are tight and stamped 555. The 27 jewel calibre 3035 automatic movement is keeping very good time. While we don’t have the box or papers for this watch, it is otherwise difficult to fault this 1985 Rolex.
