An 18k gold Oysterquartz Day-Date is not a Rolex model you will see often. Model reference 19018. Now with a longer bracelet!
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the back of the case we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1979. The serial number and the logo are rubbed but can be read with magnification.
CONDITION
The Oysterquartz was in production from 1977 until circa 2001, and in all that time it is estimated that fewer than 25,000 examples were made. For a company that make a million timepieces a year, roughly a thousand a year of one movement is just 0.1% of their production. Most of those are the date only model, like this one, so a Day-Date like this it is fair to say is rare. In 1979 the gold price was very high too, so to be able to buy a solid gold Rolex then would have been expensive. The movement is Rolex calibre 5055, which is very similar to the 5035 but with the added day wheel in English (twenty different languages were available). The date can be quickset but the day can only be adjusted by winding the crown round, but only needs setting after a battery change as the battery keeps this correct. This is a big advantage over the automatic Day-Date ‘single quick’, as this Oysterquartz version is ready to wear in rotation with other watches very quickly. We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The case looks to have been polished in the past and the very crisp edges have gone, leading to a softer look, which is mirrored on the bracelet. The bracelet does have some wear to points, mainly on the inside. The bracelet is quite long and our sister website, SpareLinks.com, may have extra links if required. The bezel is very good, with nice crisp ridges. The blue dial does have some damage to the very edge if looking with a loupe. We have found identical dials on other Oysterquartz Day-Date watches, so believe it to be original. Most of the Day-Date models had a gold dial, so anything other than gold is a little more sought after. Everything is functioning correctly, including the screw down twinlock crown.
