HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in February 1976.
CONDITION
Seiko have had a number of horological milestones, with the most important being the first commercially available quartz wristwatch in 1969. But they didn’t sit back, their R&D department continued to develop numerous other firsts, with the 0634-5001 being the first LCD chronograph watch. Launched in 1975, this is typically over engineered like many early technology examples. It wasn’t a cheap watch mind – at ¥55,000 it was nearly three times the price of an automatic chronograph and not far behind the Grand Quartz analogue watches (started from ¥58,000 in 1976). The case and bracelet are all stainless steel. The pushers for the chronograph are on the front, not side of the case. You access the chronograph function by pressing the crown inwards, then the right hand button starts it and the left hand button stops and resets the feature. Condition is quite good all over, with some light marks everywhere, and the light still works (although these were never very bright!). We will install a brand new battery before sending the watch out to the new owner. The bracelet is the original XAB 890 model and full length – these can be adjusted without special tools. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath.
