HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in May 1976.
CONDITION
At ¥100,000 when this was new, this was one of the most expensive Seiko watches you could buy – over four times more expensive in 1976 than a mechanical bullhead 6138 chronograph. Adjusted for inflation, that price would be £1,250 today. It was also one of the most accurate watches on the planet, with a claimed +/- of 5 seconds per month (COSC Chronometer standards for mechanical watches is +6/-4 seconds per day.)
The dial is now very sought after, and deservingly so. The way it shimmers and catches light is fantastic. This dial is original and clean, and all the lettering remains. The stainless steel case has some marks, but they are mainly around the bezel. The important case bevels are all in tact and this has not been polished away like on some examples. The bracelet is a Seiko one, but not the one for a Grand Seiko. This could be swapped for a leather strap if preferred. This is a shame, as the quality is lower than the original bracelet, but the price reflects this – the last silver snowflake we had sold quickly for a lot more money. Cosmetically when compared with the catalogue picture this bracelet is not a bad match though. Mechanically the watch is working well, with all functions functioning including the quick set day and date (the day wheel is in Kanji and English). The correct signed crown is still fitted. We will ft a new battery before sending this out.
