Not much is currently more desirable than a steel Rolex Oyster with a black gilt Sigma dial, and now we have a ladies example. Model reference 6718.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number between the bottom lugs we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1976.
CONDITION
The name Rolex Oyster Perpetual goes all the way back to 1932, when Rolex had already launched the Oyster in 1926 using their patented waterproofing (hence called Oyster), and in 1932 they added the automatic movement (hence Perpetual). The automatic movement is a real bonus, as the waterproof crown is a screw down one so to be unscrewing the thread daily adds wear and tear, whereas with the automatic movement you just need to shake the watch to keep it wound. As if to prove this the signed Twinlock crown on this watch does screw down perfectly smoothly. The gilt dial is very good, and the significance of the Greek letter Sigma (σ) at the bottom of the dial is that the hands and hour markers will be made from gold – this article explains why the Sigma dial came about and what it indicates. In short it is the highest quality materials only used. The bracelet is a good length, and has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. The end links are numbered 566 and the bracelet is number 78340. The movement is protected behind the screw down caseback, and like the rest of the watch is high end. The 28 jewel movement is calibre 2030, adjusted to five positions and two temperatures. It is details like this that have established Rolex as such a good brand – their marketing is superb, but it only backs up the engineering.
