HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
This watch came from a family jewellers who changed which watch brands they sold in 1975, and we bought the remaining stock from them 50 years later! This watch can’t be older than 1975 either – the movement was first launched in 1975. The Grovana history goes back to 1924, but it wasn’t until 1970 when the Bitterli family bought the business that the name Grovana appeared on the dials. The business grew, despite the Quartz Crisis that closed so many Swiss watchmakers in the 70’s and 80’s, and they now make Revue Thommen and Swiss Alpine Military watches as well as Grovana – and are still owned and run by the same family.
CONDITION
This watch is New Old Stock (NOS), and as such has never been sold and has probably only been worn for our photography. There may be small marks from being stored, but otherwise the condition is as good as you are likely to find. The manual wind Baumgartner 896 movement may have seventeen jewels, but it is a pin pallet lever so was never a high end watch – the chrome case also indicates this was designed to be a fun piece rather than high end horology. You still get a date and sweep second hand though. The leather strap is new, as the original non leather strap was too brittle to trust. The shop price tag is included, and back in 1975 this was £25.00.
