The Crown jewellers Garrard produced some very underrated watches, and this presentation gold watch is a fine example of their quality.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the long service inscription on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being awarded in 1974. The London hallmark is for 1973, and the movement production dates of 1969-1976 also fit perfectly.
CONDITION
The luxury London jeweller Garrard have made man notable things, including Princess Diana’s engagement ring, The Americas Cup and were the jeweller entrusted to cut the Koh-I-Noor diamond to a brilliant cut, but they only drew up the specification of this watch and retailed it. They entrusted DS&S, David Shackman and Sons, to make the case and that is a great choice – they also made cases for Rolex, Longines and Omega among others. Being an automatic and with a screw on case back this makes the watch thicker, which with gold watches obviously means you need more gold. Money was not an issue when Garrard designed this. The movement is a 21 jewel Swiss MSR S76, which Revue improved and decorated an already good ETA 2783. It is running well, including the quick set date, but the crown has lost some plating. The case back gasket has been changed, and the inscription for 25 years at Shell is nicely done. The dial is clean, and the leather strap is new.
