The Seiko Skyliner pocket watch would have looked retro even 50 years ago when it was new! Model reference 6102-0010.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in December 1973. This watch featured in the 1974 catalogue, and cost ¥12,000. A quartz pocket watch of the same year cost ¥85,000, as quartz was the latest technology! The Skyliner wrist watch cost ¥8,400 for comparison.
CONDITION
So if you want a pocket watch, why choose a comparatively modern Seiko like this Skyliner over maybe a turn of the century Longines or Elgin? The one big thing the Seiko has that the other will lack is shock protection on the balance. The other little thing is the case size – this is about 13mm less in diameter and 5mm thinner than most older pocket watches, meaning it will not ruin the line of your waistcoat or pocket. This Skyliner also has a quick set date, and date complications on pocket watches are rare. Inside the all stainless steel case is Seiko’s 6102A hand wound movement, which actually has triple shock protection among its twenty one jewels. All is working correctly. The case has a UFO feel about it, perfectly fashionable for 1973, and the edge of the case does have some dings. The dial and hands are good. The watch is signed on the dial, case, and movement.
