HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the London hall mark on the clasp we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1972. The inside of the case back has an earlier hallmark, but could not have been paired together with the bracelet and movement until later.
CONDITION
The case is hallmarked with the sponsor mark of Baume, who were the official importers of Longines watches into the UK. The bracelet and case are made by DS&S, David Shackman and Son, who made a lot of cases for Longines, Rolex, Omega etc during this period – there was a hefty import duty on completed gold watches, so lots of top brands asked DS&S to make the gold parts and they sent the movements and dials, thus avoiding (legally) the punitive tax. The bracelet is clever in that is is both delicate and strong, and the clasp is stamped with the Longines winged logo. The clasp also has a extra fold over security tab. There is slight stretching to the bracelet, but not much. The movement is Longines’ calibre 410, a seventeen jewel manual winding calibre which is clean and running strongly. The silver dial is very good, but being such a small watch face you would have to be very close to spot any marks anyway.
