On the highly prized original strap, this Tissot Sideral is a large, funky watch that will be noticed.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1969.
CONDITION
The Tissot Sideral models were first launched in 1968, and in a way pre date the Swatch watches that didn’t appear until 1983. They both use a plastic or fibreglass case, with movements designed to be put in via the glass. But at least the Sideral was never designed to be be disposable – the movement on this can be accessed and serviced. The movement is held in a monobloc case with a steel bezel, which means you access the movement by removing the front of the watch – not a job for an amateur without the correct tools, but easy enough for a watchmaker. The movement used in Tissot’s 784-2, a 21 jewel automatic with calendar. while it runs, it does lose a couple of minutes a day and amplitude is low so we would recommend getting this serviced if you intend on wearing it often. The really rare thing about this example though is it still being fitted to the original strap. They have a double fastener design, shown in the video, and we have checked carefully that this has no cracks and is still pliable. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement, crown and buckle.
