HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1969. It would have been for the 1970 catalogue, as shown on Omega’s own website here.
CONDITION
Everyone likes originality on vintage watches, and it is even better if the originality is matched by great condition. That is the case here, The strap is like new, but this must be a later replacement as the buckle is worn (or maybe the buckle is the replacement?). The watch is signed on the dial, movement, case back, crown and crystal as well as the strap and buckle, which is always nice to see. Inside this watch is a calibre 1001 movement, which was newly launched in 1969 and was remarkably thin for an automatic then. This 20 jewel movement boasts that it was adjusted for five positions and temperatures, so accuracy was always very good. To be called a Chronometer it had to be. The case back that holds the movement in place is held with four grub screws, and the stem is a split stem design. This makes it much harder for people that do not know what they are doing to open the watch up, which is usually a good thing for keeping everything clean. The case has a thick, 40 micron gold plating that only has minimal wear, which is fitting for the top of the range Constellation models. The dial has never been restored, and is in great condition.
