A men’s ‘Made in England’ Smiths Astral watch in very nice order. Model reference ST306
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
This model number was only made in 1968, which makes life easier for us.
CONDITION
There are two qualities of Smiths watches. Made in Great Britain watches were a lower grade, out of the Welsh factory and pin pallet movements of either 7, 5 or no jewels. The most common line of these is the Empire watches. The Made in England watches were made in Cheltenham and features far higher quality movements, usually of 15 or 17 jewels and a Swiss lever escapement. This watch has the 15 jewel Calibre 400 movement which is running well. The dial is a nice balanced design, with applied hour numerals. There are a few foxing marks on the dial but the hands appear original and straight. The back of the case does have quite a few light scratches, but no where does the case state what material is was made from There is no signs of wear to the plating, if it is plated, and no confirmation if it is made from stainless steel. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
