HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1967. We have also found a copy of a Japanese 1968 brochure showing the same model, priced at ¥49,500. For comparison, the most expensive Grand Seiko in 1968 was ¥44,000, so this was a luxury watch.
CONDITION
The all stainless steel unibloc case has done a good job of protecting both the movement and dial in this watch. To see the movement you have to remove the crystal, so it stops inexperienced people poking around where they don’t belong too, which also helps. The bracelet is long enough for most people and has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. The bracelet does show some signs of stretching, particularly by the last half link as shown in the photos. It does still retain the signed clasp. Also signed is the crown, which is countersunk into the case for protection. Although this automatic movement can be hand wound, it is not that easy because of this sunken crown. That movement is Certina’s in-house calibre 25-652, a 27 jewel movement with day and date (hence the name Certiday). The date can be semi quickset by going from midnight – 23.00 – midnight, but the day needs to be set manually. Both case and bracelet are unpolished, so will show minor scratches but nothing serious. The dial is all original and in very good condition.
