An extremely clean solid gold men’s Longines dress watch, with a long bracelet, from 1966.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement, which is for the same year as the London hallmark on this inside of the case back, we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1966.
CONDITION
If we told you that the watch was 10 years old you would be impressed with the condition, but as this is over 50 years old we doubt anyone would be disappointed. The only real marks are a couple of pin dents in the case back, which a goldsmith could easily remove (we are not goldsmiths so are not going to try!). The case and bracelet is made by D. Shackman and Son, and stamped DS&S inside the case back and on the clasp. DS&S made gold cases for Rolex, Omega, Longines and others in the UK as the import duty at this point on gold watches was crippling (1966 was the same year that The Beatles released Taxman, protesting at 95% income tax rate). What we would say with this style of watch is make sure the bracelet is long enough, and this one should fit most wrists. Not only is is expensive to get altered, not least as you have to buy extra gold, but it would also be very difficult. The clasp is signed with the Longines flying wings logo, and has three settings to adjust the bracelet for comfort. The calibre 428 movement is working to within a few seconds a day, which is testament to the quality of these older Longines.
This watch will be supplied with a presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
