HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in June 1965.
CONDITION
Launched in 1963 as the Seiko Sportsmatic 5, the Seiko 5 line revolutionized automatic watches by offering durability and functionality to a young, active demographic. Defined by five key attributes—automatic movement, day-date display, water resistance, recessed 4 o’clock crown, and durable construction, there were an immediate and lasting success. This version has a fine bezel that is behind the acrylic crystal, which catches the light nicely. The case, dial and hands all have marks but nothing horrendous. The 25 jewel movement is automatic wind only, and therefore the crown sits flush to the case. You can press the button at 3 inwards to quick set the date, but the English day wheel needs to be advanced by winding the hands past midnight. These Deluxe models had a higher jewel count than the standard watches, the extra button for the quick set date, and hacking seconds to justify the uplift in price. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and on the later buckle.
