A Japanese market Citizen Autodater from 1965, with a striking blue dial. Model reference ADSS 513094Y.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being made in August 1965.
CONDITION
The Autodater offered a lot for the money back in 1965. You get a 25 jewel automatic movement with day and date, and the date can be quickset by pulling the crown outwards. The day on this model is in Kanji, indicating it was for the Japanese domestic market. Citizen didn’t officially start importing watches into the UK until 1968. One unique to Citizen feature on this watch is the jet rotor automatic winding weight, that doesn’t mount central but instead spins wound the outside. You also get a larger than average stainless steel case, rated water proof to 40 metres (never get any vintage watch wet though!). The dial on this example is very striking, but we think it may be a repainted dial. We have very little information on Citizen’s of this age, but have not found another blue dial like this and the lettering has imperfections on the C and I of Citizen. The faceted hour markers have no paint on them though, so were either removed or the dial is factory – we don’t know! To help we have taken photos with a 43x digital microscope, where you can see even the brushing of the dial is different from side to side. The movement is all working correctly and can be hand wound, unlike many Seiko’s of the period. The Citizen bracelet is quite long and our sister website, SpareLinks.com, may have extra links if required. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. The watch is signed on the dial, case, movement and clasp.
