Garrard were the Crown Jewellers, supplier to HM Queen Elizabeth, so this sterling silver watch would have been a valuable reward for long service.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the long service inscription from Imperial Chemicals Limited to a Miss D. M. Winchester on the case back we can accurately date this watch to being engraved in 1964. The bracelet clasp is hallmarked for 1961, but the 1964 attribution is far more obvious. I.C.I. watches are not uncommon, but the men generally got steel watches so maybe Miss Winchester was higher up the organisation.
CONDITION
Based in Regents Street, Garrard have been trading for nearly 300 years and have held Royal warrants in the UK since 1843. If you need a crown, they make it. They were never true watchmakers – i.e. making their own movements – but they would specify watches that were good enough to carry the Garrard name. The dial is very clean, and the Dennison made case and bracelet were tarnished. We have cleaned this off with a jewellers cloth but it is an indication that the watch has not been worn much. The movement is a hand wind, 17 jewel AS 1156, nicely finished with Côtes de Genève striping. That little extra time (and therefore money) spent on a part of the watch that the owner would rarely if ever see is an indicator that corners were not cut. The fitted box is in good order.
