HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number between the top lugs we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1963.
CONDITION
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! While the original Air-King models were released in 1945, in 1958 the 5500 reference was launched and not really changed for 37 years. So if you want a 5500 Air-King then you will have plenty of choice, as there are a lot of them out there. This watch has the original dial, not a repainted or restored dial, so that is a big plus. Likewise the case looks unpolished, with good square tips to the lugs (overpolished cases have pointy lugs). This watch would have originally been on a steel bracelet, but this has been lost and we have fitted a good quality WatchGecko blue leather strap instead. Inside the case you will find the calibre 1530 automatic movement, running nicely, and the screw down crown is smooth too.
