HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number between the bottom lugs we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1962. The inside of the case back is also date coded for 1962. The Z clasp on the bracelet also has a date code, but this is for the first quarter of 1970. It is likely that the bracelet therefore is a later replacement, but an original Rolex part. (Rolex are the parent company of Tudor.)
CONDITION
The difference between a Rolex Oyster and a Tudor Oyster Royal is two main things – the movement and the price. The bracelet, crown and case are all made by Rolex, and signed with the crown, but the movement is not an in house design. Instead it is an ETA base, then badged Tudor. This is not all bad – ETA movements are easy to service and get parts, without going back to the manufacturer. With this watch housing a manual wind movement, it also allows a slim profile to the case, as it doesn’t have the revolving weight on the back of the movement to accommodate. The dial is all original with nicely aged lume pips, and the hands match (although the minute hand does have a mark on the lume. The bracelet is quite long and our sister website, SpareLinks.com, may have extra links if required. The bracelet has been cleaned in our ultrasonic bath. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred.
