This clean Tudor Royal, with art deco numerals, was a reward for 45 years service. Model reference 12829.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the Birmingham hallmark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1959/60. But the most obvious dating evidence we have is the nice inscription on the case back for very long service to Joseph Rank, who were millers and bakers. 25 years is far more common for long service awards, but it is amazing to think Mr J Cuddington started work there in 1915.
CONDITION
Unlike the Tudor Royal we listed recently, this one has a solid 9k gold case rather than the steel Oyster case – yet is worth significantly less. Steel Tudor Royal watches carry a premium over gold ones, which makes little sense but that is the current market. Inside the case there is proudly stamped that the case was made by Denisson for Rolex – Tudor’s parent company. This was in part due to the very excessive import duties on completed watches, whereas these could be legally avoided if Tudor sent the movements and dials to England to be completed here. The movement chosen by Tudor is an ETA base manual wind with 17 jewels, which is running well. The dial is good, with just small marks, but the numbers do look very good in the font that looks more 1920’s than 1960’s. The blue leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour if preferred. Tan or black is more normal, but the blue looked good to us.
