With a Clous de Paris textured dial and a gold filled case, this men’s Longines is a classic dress watch that is still interesting. Model reference 1044.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1958.
CONDITION
While the watch as a whole is impressive, the dial is the probably the stand out feature. The raised pyramid pattern, known as clous de Paris decoration, is very good – this pattern is better known in the AP Royal Oak watches. You also get sub seconds dial that is smooth. The applied markers, with numbers at 12, 3 6 and 9, also add to the depth of the dial. The dial is slightly bent at the edges, and the part of 6 does have some dirt in it, but you won’t notice that at first. The case is 10k gold filled, a much thicker treatment than gold plating, and while you can see some wear on the rear the rest of the case is great. Being 10k gold, and having the Wittnauer stamp inside the case means this watch was intended for the US market, and that leads to an extra bonus – for the US market the hand winding 17 jewel calibre 23Z movement was upgraded to having bevelled edges on the bridges, and a Breguet hairspring. This is surprising, as most customers wouldn’t ever see the movement or notice the upgrades, but they must have been specified by the importer. The black leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case and movement.
