This Avia 9k gold watch has a few details that raise it above the average.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the Edinburgh hallmark on the inside of the case back we can accurately date this watch to being assayed in 1958.
CONDITION
So what marks this Avia 9k gold watch apart from other gold watches from a similar period? The case is made, like many other of the period, by BWC (British Watch Company of London) has standard lugs, so a wider choice of strap is available, and was hallmarks in Scotland – quite why the local London assay office wasn’t used is a mystery! The case also has a thick bezel, with graduated lines, which is a nice design touch as it has the effect of extending the dial. The movement used is a FHF 67, 17 jewel manual wind one but unusually this has been copper plated, in much the same way that Omega watch movements were, with Côtes de Genève striping to the bridges. Only the watchmaker would see this. The dial is all original, with gold hour markers matching the gold hands. The case has a few minor marks, the dial is a little grubby and the crown sticks out a little from the case on the negative, but these are minor points on a watch of this age. The leather strap is very lightly used, and could be swapped for a new strap or a different colour if preferred.
