HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1957.
CONDITION
The first automatic watch with a date window was the Rolex Datejust, launched in 1945, and in 1952 Tissot came up with a new movement to also meet that challenge. Calibre 28.5R 621 was their in house, 17 jewel auto with full rotor (many early automatics were bumper movements, which are not nearly as efficient). Like the Rolex, it didn’t have quick set date but few people had more than one watch, so it wasn’t a real issue back then – a lot of people if they got a nice watch would wear it for life. The gold capped case is good, save for a dink on the end of one lug, and has a steel screw down case back that claimed to be waterproof. The dial has been refinished and has some patina, but it does look like the arrowhead hour markers were removed and refitted for the restoration – this isn’t always the case. The golden markers look excellent against the black dial, as do the dagger hands. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The watch is signed on the dial, case and movement.
