The distinctive bat wing lugs on this Bulova President really make this watch a little different to the norm for the mid fifties.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the case back and a matching mark on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1956.
CONDITION
Overall the watch is good, but there is some patina on the dial, possibly from smoke damage. On the plus side, it does mean the dial is original and not repainted. Having checked this website it appears that our watch also has the original Kreisler gold filled 10K bracelet that is fitted to their President, and we have cleaned this expanding bracelet in our ultrasonic bath. The watch case itself is also rolled gold, a much thicker coating that must be at least 5% of the case weight. Gold plated watches are hardly ever gold plated on the caseback, as it would wear through too quickly. However this rolled gold covers the case and the caseback, so confident were Bulova that this would not show wear. They were right. Inside the watch you find an in house Bulova 11AC movement, with 17 jewels and shock protection, which is accessed from the front. The expanding part of the bracelet does have some wear, as shown in the photographs, but it would be possible to swap this expanding bracelet for a leather strap – but don’t loose the bracelet, as it is part of the watch history.
