A 1950 Omega with black radium dial is quite hard to find, and it is lovely to find with the stainless steel case too.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the original movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1950.
CONDITION
We are always cautious when buying any black dialed vintage watch, as they were scarce in their day and black is the favourite colour of the watch dial restorer as it hides more. However, we have checked this with our geiger counter and the dial and hands are radium coated. This wasn’t really available post 1955, so with that and some natural patina on the dial we are happy that this is original. The dial is not completely black anymore, but has faded to a dark brown ‘tropical’ effect. There is a very small hole in the hour hand lume. The 265 movement is a watchmakers favourite – so many watchmakers we know have one of these in their personal collection, and this watch is going for service now so it will be running sweetly. The photos are taken before service. The inside of the case back is stamped with the Omega logo and the model number 2540-7, and the case also has drilled lugs to make strap changes simple. The leather Hirsch strap is new, but this watch might look just as good on a NATO strap given the resemblance to the WW2 Omega watches that were military issue.
