HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the long service engraving on the stainless steel case back we can accurately date this watch to being given in 1948.
CONDITION
Watches in this condition from the 1940’s do not come around that often. Add to that the size is a larger than average 33mm, the original dial is difficult to fault and the watch has interesting design details and you should quickly be trying to find reasons not to buy this. The company Record first started making watches in 1903, and there most famous and sought after watches are probably the dirty dozen military watches they produced in 1944. The company was eventually sold to Longines in 1961.
This watch has several very nice features. The horn style lugs are drilled to make strap changing easy – the strap is an Avia NOS suede one, but other colours or materials could be swapped if you let us know at checkout. The bar hands are a rare thing to find – this is the first watch we have ever owned with them, and the only other watches we know of that use this type of design are Roger W. Smith ones (whose watches are in a different league in every way). Even the crown is nicely detailed. Inside is an in house movement, the Record 022-18 SC, which is clean and running very well. The case back has the inscription that helps is date the watch to 1948, but the rest of the inscription is in Dutch and we do not know who or what UMB is, or who Frans Al van Steen was.
