With the 10k rose gold filled case, this American made Elgin watch is a smaller tank model that was typical for the times.
HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?
From the serial number on the movement we can accurately date this watch to being made in 1945.
CONDITION
Whilst small, this was exactly the size of watch that was popular with people in 1945. In 1942 Humphrey Bogart wore his personal Longines, also with a copper coloured dial, in the film Casablanca. The manual wind calibre 588 movement was introduced in 1944, and was an upgrade on the 557 by having seventeen jewels instead of fifteen. It was only intended for the De Luxe models, and it is running well now. The copper coloured dial is original and has a few marks, but the blued hands are easy to read against the copper background. The rose gold filled case clips together nicely, with just a small patch of wear on the case back. The deeply curved acrylic crystal has a tiny mark above three but is otherwise good. The leather strap is new, and could be swapped for a different colour or material if preferred. The buckle in the photos and video is yellow gold plated, but we have since sourced a rose gold plated buckle that better suits the case. The watch is signed on the dial, case and movement.
