While only branded Hudson Maxim on the dial, this watch was made and marketed by Bulova and has a gold filled case.

HOW DO WE DATE THIS WATCH?

Using a combination of the serial number and the fact that movements were stamped Bulova W. Co until April 1923 like this one is, and after that date they were marked Bulova Watch Co., we have determined this watch was likely produced in 1922.

CONDITION

Hudson Maxim was an important American inventor, but we have not yet found a link between him and Bulova.  He was more known for smokeless gunpowder, but Bulova not only had the Hudson Maxim men’s watches but also the Lady Maxim ladies watches, as we can see from period adverts on this website.  What we do know is that he did not invent the Maxim machine gun – that was his brother!  This watch has a 17 jewel movement, adjusted to five positions and with swan neck regulation so is very high specifation.  The jewels sit in chantons, which is a very discrete sign of quality as it only makes a tiny difference yet is difficult and expensive to do.  We have not been able to identify the calibre, which was often stamped on the dial side of the movement at this time.  The movement runs quite well for such an old watch, but can be a little jumping when setting the hands.  The case is made by Star Watch Case, and is 14k gold filled.  This is much thicker than gold plate, and it was guaranteed for 25 years.  Given that this guarantee expires in 1947, the case is still in very good order and is a credit to SWC.  The dial has patina but not damage, and it never had any lume so there is no radium present.  The hands look to be original when compared with pictures of others, and are nicely blued.  This is much smaller than most men’s pocket watches and you could fit a trench style wrist band and convert this to a temporary wrist watch without looking silly.

This watch will be supplied with our branded presentation box and our Certificate of Authenticity.
